Jean-Pierre Gagné lives in Montreal, the city where he was born and raised. He grew up in a large family, the second of seven children. His early years were immersed in a musical world with piano and guitar lessons, choir at school, the parish, and the scouts. Jean-Pierre adored singing. This was the time of the “chansonniers” when all Quebec sang the songs of its poet-singers. Then along came the British invasion, and Jean-Pierre developed a passion for the electric guitar, transforming the family basement into a studio. From then on, his world revolved around playing music. Endless hours were spent strumming the guitar, improvising.
Not surprisingly, his improvisational approach to music led him to composition. As a band member, he along with other members composes original music. They vary the instruments: synthesizer, flute, piano, percussions, violin etc. Their style is progressive rock in the proud continuation of the baroque suite. Their music is a journey through various motives, a path carved largely by fate.
Eventually Jean-Pierre’s working technique pushed him towards an education in composition at the Université de Montréal where he studied classical and contemporary music. He then began composing chamber and orchestral pieces and adding string quartets to his arrangements.
The songs contained in his new EP are the result and show his commitment to electric as well as acoustic instruments.
